and avoid those tax increases? we're getting our first look tonight at president obama's proposal and the republican reaction. major garrett is at the white house for us tonight. major. >> reporter: scott, the first hard numbers from the white house to resolve the fiscal cliff crisis landed with a thud on capitol hill. congressional republicans called it an insulting joke. here's the big picture-- $4 trillion of deficit reduction over the next 10 years. it includes $1.6 trillion in higher taxes on households make manage more than $250,000. there's also $400 billion in cuts to entitlement programs, like medicaid and medicare, as well as others. there is also fresh new aending. $50 billion next year in stimulus spending, all for infrastructure. the white house calls this an opening bid. house republicans call it a rehash of old ideas and also object to the idea of a white house asking a permanent legislative remedy to raising the debt ceiling, all of it, the republicans say rather, is unacceptable. now much of this was conveyed in a 28-minute phone conversation yesterday between pre
, good afternoon, craig. as you can see the holiday decorations are going up here at the white house. but it doesn't seem like anyone is in the holiday spirit. in fact, house speaker john boehner today said that these negotiations are essentially in a stalemate. president obama as you know hit the road, went to hatfield, pennsylvania to take his case to the people of pennsylvania. trying to put pressure on republicans to get on board with his plan to increase taxes on the wealthiest americans. he made his case at a toy maker there and exceptionally said that if lawmakers can't get a deal done by the first of the year, taxes will go up on middle class americans by about $2,000. that will be bad for middle class americans and also bad for businesses like connects toy maker which is where he spoke a little earlier on today. especially as we enter the busy holiday shopping season. here is a little more of what president obama had to say today. take a listen. >> if congress does nothing, every family in america will see their income taxes automatically go up on january 1st. every family.
to the u.n. >>> we begin with the ultimate power lunch at the white house. president obama and mitt romney face-to-face for the first time since the election and talk about a picture's worth 1,000 words. try a million for this one. only one word really you need which is awkward. just after this lunch took place, the president offered a tough fiscal cliff proposal to congress, one that aides to john boehner say -- wait for it -- he's already rejected. of course he has. joining me to talk about all things politics, "new york times" columnist frank bruni and ross doufit. how many seconds was it, do you think, gentlemen, let me start with you, frank, before john boehner rejected out of hand president obama's attempt to try and do a fiscal cliff deal? >> with $1.6 trillion in new taxes, i think probably half a second. >> when you see the apparent attempt at a bipartisan lunch going on today between obama and romney, it was all very sweet and everything, the reality is the picture was about as uncomfortable as the relationship is between the two sides, and again, frank, how do we get to a better
and republican strategist, mary matalin and cornel belcher, democratic strategist and pollster with the obama 2012 campaign. mary, what do you make of the details of this opening bid from the white house? republicans have already dismissed it but does it give us any clues at all about what an eventual deal might look like? >> it's reported that mitch mcconnell, senate minority leader, burst out laughing when he heard it. it's not even worthy of a laugh. it's really sad, it's pathetic. we went from a reasonable theoretical $3 in cuts for $1 in revenue which was basically the simpson-bowles, and are now at $4 of real and immediate tax increases plus new spending for in the future unspecified, uncertain cuts to we don't know what. how could anyone take that seriously? i don't even -- i thought we were doing a kabuki dance. this is not a kabuki dance. i don't even know what this is. it's worse than laughable. it's embarrassing. this president won this election, he's supposed to be leading, and he's doing anything but. it's really sad, wolf. it's really sad. >> let me bring cornel into this conver
and a lot of white voters as well really like barack obama. so they missed that. they seemed to think voting in '08 was an aberration and a fluke. that was a wrong assumption. the second thing they missed was a lot of polls, even some of the polls nbc did showed republican enthusiasm was a little higher than democratic enthusiasm in some states. the campaign took that to mean the democrats weren't going to turn out. some tea partiers were really excited but a lot of democrats were just as excited. >> right. karen, into today's "new york times" timothy egan writes, if you believe in climate change, finding a path to citizenship for millions of hard working hispanics, and the right to marry the person you love, there is no place in the republican party of 2012 for you. when you toss in romney's contempt for 47% of the country and the ayn rand budget of paul ryan, it's hard to imagine romney himself believed these internal polls. >> apparently so. again, they had so deluded themselves about the reality of who this country is and what this country is about, again, it goes to they kept telling us
obama and mitt romney had a private lunch at the white house today. we know what they ate but no specifics about their conversation. the get together marked their first meeting since facing off in the third presidential debate. the menu included turkey chilly and southwestern grilled chicken saeid. the former rivals posed for an official autograph in the oval office. much of the hour long conversation focused on america's leadership in the world. >>> meanwhile, president obama sent vice president biden to do some christmas shopping, sort of. he went to a suburban costco to talk about the fiscal cliff and tax cuts. he took photos with shoppers, chatted up the staff and was followed around the store by a huge crowd. his favorite part, like many of us who go to costco, all those free samples. he did get around to talk tax cuts. >> i think it's important that congress acts now. i mean, right now. all that needs to be done is extend the middle class tax cut. >> he bought cookies, children's books, an apple pie and a 32 inch tv. he declined an offer to buy a set of tires saying,
